Linked 52 - Gathering

Happy Thanksgiving

gathering...

family, the one I was born into and the one that I helped make
friends
eating turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes, broccoli, jello
not eating stuffing, dinner rolls, green bean casserole
mom's pumpkin chiffon pie and leaving the crust
arguments, can't get away from them
laughter, always lots of this
talking, usually hogged by two
gazing off into space after eating too much
gabbing with my sister while washing dishes
letting her know I'll take mom christmas shopping
looking through the black friday ads
taking turns talking to kira on the phone
skyping with andy
loving that my children are adults, yet missing how they were when they were little
looking toward the future
loving that my mother is still with us
wonderful co-workers
a pretty okay day at work
gorgeous sunrise yesterday
even more gorgeous sunset
64 degrees and joggers in shorts on thanksgiving eve to 23 degrees and snow on thanksgiving night
my sister not drinking
all of us pulling together and not drinking with her
a glass of wine when I got home
son and his girl off to find some deals
hubs starting a fire in the stove
falling asleep on the sofa because of that fire
all in all a wonderful thanksgiving 2012

Please leave me a comment...be sure to see what gathering means to them.

Linked 52 - Family

Family, whew, we haven't all been together for over two years.
Andy has been home a few times and Kira has been home a few times but those times haven't been at the same time.
I've got my fingers crossed that we can all get together for Christmas this year, as I already know Kira will be here and Andy is much more family oriented than I had ever thought, so I think he'll be here...how exciting, my chicks all together, and that's only a little more than six months that I have to wait. Too bad that the time will actually fly right by. I swear, the older I get, the faster time goes.
Scary  :-(

Meet my crazy, wonderful, talented family...I love them all to pieces!

My youngest, Ethan

My middle, Andy

My oldest, Kira

Linked 52 - Father

Henry Harry Shocinski
February 13, 1918 - June 19, 1978

I don't remember very much about my father, then again I don't remember much about my mother either,
and she's still living.
I have a horrible memory, always have. I can read a book and not be able to really tell you about it.
I can re-read a book and be surprised.
My childhood is pretty much a blur, except for those few things that are burned into my memory.

These are some things I do remember about my dad...

he bowled on a league every Wednesday night for as long as I can remember.
he stirred cream and sugar into his coffee for a looonnnggg time
he knew the names of All my stuffed animals
he had big arm muscles from working at a lumber yard
he used to smoke Camel's and it was long enough ago that children could run down to the store and
get a pack of cigarettes for their dad
he loved to fish and taught me (the fish knew it was me on the other end of the line and made sure
to stay away)
he took us to a lake resort every summer and would take us for speed boat rides
he took us water skiing, over and over and over
he taught me to drive and bought me my first car (1966 Buick Special - YUK! It was an old person's car,       but I ended up loving it, because it was all mine)
he took me golfing (even though I was terrible)
he loved to deer hunt and we would tag along and walk the woods with him
he built his own home (actually built it)
he loved woodworking
he made me a hutch
he made me a desk/bookcase and a bookcase
he made me a jewelry box
he used to draw cartoons, very well
he yelled at me when I colored outside of the lines
he did Not like runny scrambled eggs
he loved blood sausage and would cut the frozen links with a meat cleaver when he was drunk
he drank a lot when I was in my teens
he was really mad when I got my ears pierced (at 18 years old)
he denied being an alcoholic because he didn't go to work drunk
he would hide his whiskey
he was drunk every weekend and later on, every evening
he didn't like my boyfriend
he wouldn't allow us to touch
he believed a girl did not need to know how to change a tire because if she got a flat,
some Man would stop and help her
he didn't believe a girl needed to have a college education because when she got married,
her husband would take care of her
when he got sick, his eyes were jaundiced and he had abdominal and back pain
we thought for sure it was cirrhosis of the liver
it was pancreatic cancer...

Some of this may be why I don't remember a lot about my childhood, and am having a really hard time finding something positive to write...and I can't believe I am actually going to press Publish, but I am.

I drink very infrequently, don't like when others have more than a couple of drinks, can't tolerate when they lose control, and am scared to death one of my children will follow in my father's footsteps
and be an alcoholic.

I pray that someday when we meet again, this will no longer be an issue.
I do pray that he is at peace.

Check out what these ladies have to say about Father...(I certainly hope I have everyone, please let me know if I don't)

Sunday - Wednesday alphabet...I

I was wracking my brain trying to think of something starting with the letter I and while at work today, which happens to be Monday, Memorial Day and not Sunday, I thought of the cemetery where my Dad and Grandparents are and I thought of interment.

interment, or burial, is the act of placing a person or object into the ground. This is accomplished by excavating a pit or trench, placing an object in it, and covering it over.

I thought that was pretty fitting for Memorial Day, and here are some pictures of my maternal grandparents, her parents, and my father. Mom's name and birth year are already on the stone, patiently waiting for the other year to be added.

Ihnet are my mom's parents...Babyak are my grandmother's parents.

My dad...waiting for my mom.

My great-grandparents.

My grandparents.

Linked 52 - Mother...

December 12, 1920 was the day this woman was born.
The world was just a bit different then than it is now.
When I think of all of the changes she has lived through, it sort of boggles my mind.
There were streetcars back then (we live in Minnesota, where there are no streetcars), rotary dial phones, party lines, no television, radio shows, stockings with seams, dresses, even in winter. Things cost a lot less, and they made a lot less. Here are the prices of just a few things...

1 pound bacon:  52 cents
1 pound butter:  70 cents
1 pound bread:  12 cents
1 pound chicken:  39 cents
1 pound coffee:  47 cents
1 dozen eggs:  47 cents
5 pounds flour:  41 cents
3 heads lettuce:  25 cents
1/2 gallon milk:  33 cents
1 pound peaches:  17 cents
5 pounds sugar:  97 cents
1 pound watermelon:  2 cents
10 pounds potatoes:  63 cents
1 pound round steak:  40 cents

Fortunately for me, (God willing) my family has longevity on it's side. My maternal grandmother was 94 years old when she died, my maternal grandfather was 80. My paternal grandmother was 96 and my maternal grandfather...I am not certain, my dad grew up with a stepfather, but I kind of think he was in his 70's?  My father died at age 60 from pancreatic cancer, and he was the youngest and the first of his siblings to die, and I think he was the only one that had cancer.
My mother is 92, and she has nothing wrong with her...except that her hearing is pretty bad. My oldest sister lives with her and complains All the time about her inability to hear (she hears me just fine, but I look at her when I talk to her, my sister, not so much) she tells me it's because Mom likes me better!
hahaha  hmmm  maybe

The thing that really scares me is the fact that when you get to be 92, your time is very limited. None of us know when we are going to die, but the younger a person is, the less we tend to think of it.

My Mother is a beautiful woman.

She is sweet...

       Kind.................................................Loving......................................................Supportive

Very shy........................................Hates having her picture taken............................but did it anyway...

for me!

I love her!

Linked 52 - Growth

I had a difficult time thinking of something to write about for this word. I read the other blogs trying to get some inspiration.
My kids aren't little anymore,
I'm not going through any big personal growth,
I'm not in need of His help at the moment, even though I know He is with me at all times,
I have a yard full of things growing...ack!
I'm in a good place right now, life is going smoothly, peacefully, with no real ups or downs. All three of my children are now living away from home, two in different states. A little less than two years ago, my husband and I drove a U-Haul full of our son and his girlfriend's possessions to Cincinnati Ohio, got them settled, then took the Amtrak back home, packed up our daughter's car, then she and I drove to Phoenix Arizona where she had a zookeeper job at the Phoenix Zoo waiting for her. I got her settled then flew home. I.never.want.to.do.that.again. This all took place within nine days. Whew!

Less than one year later, our youngest son moved in with some friends for several months, then this past January, he and his girlfriend moved into a house they are renting.

I have accepted all of these changes with barely a tear...why no tears?! Cell phones and Skype. I text a lot with my daughter and have regular Skype dates with my son, and the youngest son we see often.
My husband's siblings are spread out all over the country and I remember telling him that I feared having my children move to a different state when they grew up. I really did not want that to happen, I want them close to me, I want to have them over for dinner, get togethers and bonfires, but what happened anyway?!?
Arizona is a Long way from Minnesota. Missouri (they moved again) is closer than Ohio, but still too far to just bop on up for a weekend.
I'm praying that they will both be able to move back sometime soon, or at least just one state away. I miss my babies!
So, after writing all this, I guess maybe there is some growth going on here, I've grown into an "Empty Nester", and it's okay, I'm okay.

They are all doing fine, fairly happy, Kira hates Arizona (too damn Hot), but the zoo is great, Andy doesn't care for Springfield, he's a chef and there aren't any high end restaurants there (he's not learning anything new at the one he's at), but he's there more for his girlfriend right now, Ethan is doing just fine.
So, I guess until something happens with one of them, I will just continue to grow into my job of wife...hmmm!

Universal Studios...

Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can hardly stand it, I am officially On Vacation!

I have 11 glorious day off work.

Sunday, Southwest Airlines will fly us to Orlando, and on Saturday, it will bring us back home.
Kira and Andy are meeting us down there for a few days and we are going to
Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure.
Just like the Chicago Airshow,
Universal Studios just does not get old for me.
I revert to a child in both places and that is just fine with me.

Universal Studios...Here we come!

Remembering my word...

I picked my word to center myself with and I've already forgotten to use it.

Believe..I need to believe that this pup will be okay in his new home. That his new brother will accept him and not dominate him. I need to believe that he will learn, he is so very smart, that he will thrive, that he will continue to be a very nice, loving little pup. I need to believe that his new brother will have a little surgery done so he too can be a happy, calm, loving dog. I need to believe in my son and his girlfriend, that they actually know what they are doing and will be able to handle any problems that may arise. I need to believe that I can keep my nose out of their lives and let them live them as they see fit. Oh my, it is soooo very hard to be a mom to adult children. I still want to tell them what to do and how to do it. I try to keep it down to suggestions, many, many suggestions.
We got to know this little guy while he stayed with us for a few days. It was a little touch and go the first day, but we quickly got used to each other. With my daughter's training tips, we found out just how smart he is. He is a quick learner, he loves to play catch, he got used to our cats, and stopped pulling Annie's neck fur. We were working on the word 'leave it', and another day or two would be all he needs, but he won't be learning that from us now, he'll have to learn that from his dad. I believe I'll wait until my son has his next couple of days off before I go see him.

Maybe we can all go for a walk.
Kilo could wear his new jacket!

New Phone…

Finally, I am moving into the world of smartphone technology. I grew up with rotary phones, black & white T.V., room size computers (for business only), stingray bikes with sissy bars and banana seats and no central air-conditioning. Young people these days don’t think twice about paying for cells phones and internet service, flat screen televisions and cable. I try to look for the very best deal I can possibly find for anything I want to buy because, I’ll admit it, I am cheap!

Within the last couple of years I started a Facebook Profile and now, darn it, I’m hooked. tsk, oh well, what can I say?! Everyone around me takes photos with their smartphones and uploads them to Facebook. They Google, they Blog, they listen to music, they send email, they play games, they watch Netflix. Well, I can only see something cool for so long before I want it too.

I seem to be easily influenced I guess, because lately I have been doing a little searching for smartphones. I was bound and determined to get an iPhone because I’ve been watching Andy with his and it just looks so cool, and I have an iPod and already know how to use it. Then I got to thinking, what would I do with my iPod??

Ethan’s phone completely died a couple months ago and he couldn’t get another like it without having to pay for it, so he was using my old phone which was about 3 years old. He really wanted this indestructible phone, so when he got some money for graduation, he immediately stopped in to Verizon and bought his phone. Kira has been talking about a new phone for months also because hers just turns off for no reason. She also wanted an iPhone…really bad. I figure if both of them are getting smartphones and they are on my Family Plan, well, I guess I should too.

Because I’ve purchased phones through Wirefly before, they send me emails every now and then. I just happened to get an email last Friday, and I spent some time looking at the different phones they were offering through Verizon for FREE!!! I liked the DROID Incredible 2 by HTC the best, so I forwarded the email to Kira for her to look at also. She was having a difficult time thinking about a phone other than the iPhone, but when she realized it would be FREE instead of $299, she stopped in to the Verizon store, played with a few phones, and became a convert. She agreed the DROID Incredible 2 by HTC would be an agreeable alternative.

I ordered them online and it all seemed to go smoothly, but then, like everything else in my life, there were snags. My phone # was not listed as primary on my Verizon account and instead of the phones being free, they would now be close to $200 each! I was able to stop in to the Verizon store and talk to a real live person and get this snag changed, (after having a little stress induced crying jag).  My phone # is now primary and our phones should be here by the middle of next week. Kira will still have to wait a bit longer than that, because I will have to resend it to her new apartment in Phoenix.  Nothing is simple when you are cheap! hahaha

Here’s a photo of the DROID Incredible 2 by HTC

Cincinnati…

Last Saturday, after the Jethro Tull concert,

P1020427  P1020428  P1020430  P1020431  David and I packed up my new car and drove 13 hours to visit Andy in Cincinnati. We had an easy time staying awake, because we were excited to be visiting, even though it had only been three days since he was here visiting us. The Sync in my car works pretty well once you get used to how it works. The voice that answers first is a sweet, nice voice and the voice that gives the actual directions is just a little bit stern. (I think she could take a few pointers!)

We got settled, left David sleeping on the sofa and Andy and I went grocery shopping. I always buy groceries for Kira and I wanted to buy them for Andy too. It was kind of funny trying to get him to put things in the cart. I had to ask, do you need this? do you need that? He thought the Kroger’s was expensive, but they were cheaper than Cub and he had a Kroger’s card which gave him pretty good discount on some items.

There is a hamburger place called Terry’s Surf Club that Andy takes all his visitors to. A tiny little place that makes Great burgers. We had a 45 minute wait, so we grabbed some beers and stood around outside, watching people while Andy took Fat pictures of us. Apparently this is what one looks like after consuming a burger at Terry’s Turf Club!!

photo 3   photo 1   photo 2

After dinner we walked around the Fountain Plaza and had an ice cream. Hmmm, maybe I should have looked at the pictures before the icecream!! Oh, my poor, poor tummy!!

Monday, we planned to go to the zoo, and we started out, but it began to pour and Andy was feeling crummy. We decided to go back home and let him sleep while David and I did some shopping. We soon got bored shopping and the weather had taken a turn for the wonderful, so we left Andy a note and off we went to the zoo. We are MN Zoo members, so we got 50% off reciprocity on admission…nice! We got about 1/2 way through when Andy called wondering where we were. I told him the zoo was open till 6 and he should come meet us, which he did.

P1020456  P1020458   P1020439  P1020436

Earlier in the day, David and I had gone into the Lorikeet exhibit, where all of these beautiful, colorful birds are just flying around free. There are some Keepers in there with birdseed sticks and cups of nectar to give to visitors to feed the birds with. We just watched and took pictures.

P1020445  P1020446  P1020448  P1020449

Later when we went back with Andy, all visitors were gone and most of the birds were back in their cages, but the ones that were still out were quite friendly. All you had to do was put out your hand and you had a bird on you.

P1020461      P1020467  P1020468  P1020470  P1020471

Andy got the pleasure too…

P1020466  P1020472

I don’t think he was quite as Okay with it as David was. Notice there are no pictures of me wearing a bird….uh, uh, nope, not for me.

As we were making our way to the exit, we noticed we missed the Children’s Zoo, so we wandered through there and look what was showing off.

P1020473  P1020474  P1020476  P1020479  P1020475

We did see one more animal that wasn’t really a zoo animal, but because I love them and I think they are cute and fun to watch, I took this photo…

P1020477

Andy made some wonderful chicken, mushroom, tomato pizza with a white sauce and mozzarella cheese. Yum! We watched Pulp Fiction till we couldn’t keep our eyes open any longer.

Tuesday David and I went to the Cincinnati Art Museum specifically to see the Circus Poster’s they had on exhibit. They were pretty cool and I found out that Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey traveled together for a few years. I never knew that. They didn’t allow any photography, so I didn’t get to take any.

Tuesday evening we had reservations at Boca, http://www.boca-restaurant.com/which is the restaurant that Andy works at. We started with an appetizer of

SEARED DAY BOAT SCALLOP ***I had never had brussel sprouts and I don’t care if I ever have them again.
caramelized brussels sprouts, parmigiano regiano
& brown butter truffle vinaigrette

and our entrees were…

David

WOOD FIRED BRANZINO
mediterranean sea bass, grilled zucchini, zucchini mint salad & lemon oil

Janet

ROASTED FOSTER FARMS CHICKEN BREAST
lemon arugula risotto & chicken jus

We also had some fabulous wine. Above was all we ordered, but it wasn’t all we got. We got gifted the following…I requested small portions, because I get way too full. We ended up taking 1/2 of our entrees with us and ate them on the drive back to MN.

MARSHALL ISLANDS TUNA CRUDO
compressed watermelon, avocado, jalapeƱo & house made ponzu

WOOD FIRED LEMONS
ortiz anchovy, basil, tomato, buffalo mozzarella & grilled bread

BAVETTE CON BOTTARGA
linguini pasta, oven roasted tomatoes, cured tuna roe, chili oil,
flat leaf parsley & breadcrumbs

CAPPELLACCI DI MAIS CON TARTUFO NERO  *******My favorite!!! Geez, these little things are addictive!
sweet corn & mascarpone filled house made pasta,
summer truffle & brown butter

Then for dessert, we had an almond cake with berries and an ice cream on top. (Andy will cringe at my description, but it’s not listed on the menu and I can’t remember what all was in it….I just know it was scrumptious) and of course, coffee, wonderful coffee. It was even decaf!!

We got to see the kitchen, which is right there in the open, quite small too with five stations and up to eight people back there at all times. It must be like a ballet when they’re cooking. All I have to say is…if you are ever in Cincinnati, you Must eat at Boca!!

Wednesday we packed up and took a walk downtown, stopping for a bagel and coffee along the way. We ended up at a park in front of P&G building where Andy joined us after he woke up.

P1020481  P1020482  P1020486  P1020485  261955_1640404428321_1783128863_1068448_3920515_n  268194_1640443709303_1783128863_1068500_4860720_n

All of the greenery on the arbors are Trumpet Vines. Of course they weren’t in bloom, but I can just imagine what they must look like covered in orange blooms1

We had a wonderful visit! The long, long, drive home was boring and long, but we got fabulous gas millage even with the air on for 1/2 of the trip, 37.5 was the average! So, now I guess we wait until Lauren finds out where they are planning on sending her (hopefully someplace good), then we will have a new place to visit. I do miss him, but at least there are cell phones and Skype.
