Linked 52 - Tools...

Tools, well, what kind of tools?
There are an awful lot of different tools that one can use on any given day.

Such as tools for...

woodworking
book making
candle stick making
cooking
cleaning
sewing
crafting
plumbing
refinishing
car care
electronics
gardening

I have dabbled in all of the above at some time in my life, but for this prompt, I chose gardening tools.

One would think that I have neat and tidy gardens, seeing as how I spent most of the last 6 months in a crouch or on my hands and knees, playing in the dirt, killing my back and wrist, getting eaten alive by mosquitoes and gnats, wondering how much longer my luck can possibly hold out before I get mold spores in my lungs and end up in the hospital.

Well, um, NO, I do not have neat and tidy gardens, but I sure would like to. I would like to be able to go away for a week and not have to worry about what the gardens will look like when I return. I would like to have friends over and not be embarrassed by the state of my yard. I would like to go for my monthly massage and be able to ask for a relaxing massage, because no part of me really hurts.
The gardening I do is just a LOT of work that I do over and over and over again. Why? Because I was stubborn and didn't want to lay down weed block. I hated the old felt-like weed block we had years ago and refused to put that down again. Luckily we found a much lighter one that we/I am happy with. We have a couple more spots to finish up before winter (fingers and toes crossed), because I am getting real tired of pitching wood chips.
One of our projects over winter (in addition to finishing the basement that was supposed to be done this past spring) is to make a couple of Adirondack chairs (our old ones rotted) out of treated lumber, then paint and seal them so they are ready for some serious use come spring. I'd like them to be a little bit over-sized, and if we can find a pattern for the gliders, Yippee!!! I Love gliders.
My plan for next summer is to grab one of those chairs, find a nice cool shady spot in the yard, get a glass of pink lemonade, a good book, and relax and enjoy all my hard work, as often as I possibly can. (guess I'll have to make sure I go for extra walks and ride my bike to work)

Here is a little peek at my most used gardening tools...

I also took a few pictures that have nothing to do with gardening tools, but they do have a lot to do with gardening...

Stop on by these blogs and see what kind of tools these lovelies use!

Linked 52 - Up...

I think UP in the sky is a pretty obvious take on the word UP, but I think there will be only a few of us
who chose it.
I find it very interesting that there are so many differing opinions on a word or phrase and I can't wait to see
what everyone else thought of UP.

I went with my first thought, which was taking pictures of the sky on subsequent days of the week. I had
fun and I only wish the storm that blew through at the beginning of the week would have been worse so I could have gotten a more creepy looking sky.

But, it is what it is!

Well, these last two aren't exactly UP in the sky, but they are UP from low down, ha!

Linked 52-Work

We are in the process of getting a new LIS (laboratory information system) in the hospital lab where I work, so the excuse I have for not getting this done on Friday is...I have been really busy. I've been ordering lab tests on fake people, then entering low normal, normal, and high normal results into our new LIS to make sure the correct reference ranges are in and that they cross into EPIC correctly. The normal reference range for some tests are the same for everyone (males and females from birth on up), while other tests have a different reference range for different ages and sex, and each component of each test needs to have a result entered and verified, then entered onto a spreadsheet. This spreadsheet is then our proof that the LIS has been tested and verified. Working as a Medical Laboratory Technician for the last 35 years, I know that we perform a great number of tests per day, and we take the LIS for granted as we all do with technology, so on the occasions that it is scheduled for maintenance or a squirrel chews through a major power cord (and dies a very quick death) or EPIC is down for one of the same reasons, we find out the hard way just how many tests we perform. (we have to call or fax every test to the units, which then slows down the turn around time and we get yelled at - literally yelled at).
Not all techs work in all departments, I am a two year tech and am not allowed to work in Blood Bank or Microbiology (even though I am able, my lack of a higher degree won't allow me). The departments I do work in are Hematology, Coagulation, and Urinalysis, and I am Lead Tech in the Sendout Department. This is the area in which I am doing the testing for our new LIS, and it is slow and tedious work, spent sitting in front of a computer, getting a headache.

This is dated March 29, because I used it for another post...I was blessed to get a second monitor, which
has made my work 100% easier. Now I can toggle between 2-3 pages/programs per monitor and not have to try and do it all on just one. So...boo hoo for me, that's my 'I'm sorry teacher, but my dog ate my homework' excuse. Not convincing?! So...how about this...

I'm also trying to finish tiling the bathroom in my basement, I have all the tile in, and Monday I'm going to grout. Then I'll install the trim and bead board, paint it and the walls, then my hubby will put in the sink,
toilet, medicine chest and lights. It all sounds so simple, but it takes forever when we only get time to
work on it after dinner.

Then, there are my gardens that are going to take a TON of work to clean up. I don't clean my gardens
in the fall, I leave them until spring (the plants have a little extra cover for the winter this way).

So...as I was taking a break Sunday from all the work I have to do, (and a whopper of a headache that kept me home from church), I wandered around my yard and took some pictures...this kind of work was a lot more fun.

03.18.12...

March 18 - book

After church today, I stopped at Menard's to pick up some paint for the porch ceiling. I want to finish off the ceiling with the beadboard I have had for three years now, (I've been waiting for my youngest son to get it painted and help put it up...because he owes me lotsssss of money) and I was all out of white ceiling paint. I suppose I didn't need 'ceiling paint' but is was the cheapest, so, there you go!

Now, it is physically impossible for me to go into any store, get what I need and leave, without spending quite a bit of time wandering about looking at all sorts of things. I happen to love wandering around Menard's and The Home Depot, I get so many ideas this way, which is what happened today. I finally found myself in the paint department, after picking up a five pack of socks, looking at landscaping blocks, decorative antique looking tins, and garden shed plans. They just happen to have their 'How To' books in the paint department and, well, I pretty much have to look at books when I see them. I looked through several and then came upon this book...

Just what I wanted...we've been thinking of building a combination greenhouse/gardenshed and this has a lot  of examples of both and how to get electricity and water to it, etc.

This is pretty much what I would like. I've been looking on Craigslist for used windows, but so far I haven't found any that I want. I'm going to stop at Bauer Bros. tomorrow and see what they have for decent windows.

I could have just told my husband about this great book and he could have taken a look at it next time he was in Menard's, but it found it's way into my cart and once something jumps into my cart, I usually let it stay there. I found a few more cool ideas while looking though it when I got home...

Raised beds...I would love some raised beds.

Copper and bamboo fencing
(I wonder how long it would take Annie to demolish these)

Concrete edging
(I think this is a great idea, easier than laying edging blocks all around the flower gardens)

So, I've put more things on the 'To Do List' and there might be a very slight chance that one of them may get started (after the basement gets done and the flower gardens get weeded and mulched and David spends some of his weekends at the cabin splitting wood, and.................)

Well, I can dream can't I?!?

03.17.12...

March 17 - green

Happy St. Patrick's Day to ye all.

When I saw that today's word was green, my first thought was green beer. Now I don't care for beer, never have, probably never will, but green beer and St. Patty's Day just seem to go hand in hand.

I love the color green, for things I have around my house. I don't wear much green at all, but my eyes are green!!
Whenever I am at an antique shop, I always look for green glasswear, not any old green though, it has to be a certain color of green. I guess I'm kind of picky when it comes to green glasswear.

Anyway, I was thinking of something to photograph today that was green. Let's see...grass, plants, my glass serving pieces, the glass canning jar in the bathroom that we keep our toothbrushes in, the carpet up the stairs and in the hallway of the second floor, my sweater that I adopted from Kira when she left it behind.
Well, I was still thinking while I was lightly raking up all the branches and pinecones, when I came upon a piece of green glass that was once probably a beer bottle, under some bushes I was cleaning up.

It's so much prettier in person.

My Grandparents used to own the house I now live in, and way back then, they used to bury things that we would now just toss in the garbage can. We have found all sorts of things while digging holes for new plants, bushes and trees. I've finally started to keep the pieces I find and plan on using them in a mosaic project of some sort, whenever I get around to it. hahaha
Here are a few more items my husband found (excluding the green glass) while digging a hole for an egress window.

Linked 52 - Underneath...

I went scouting around my yard looking for examples of underneath. I really wanted to get a picture of Annie underneath one of the pine trees, doing what she does best...barkingatthesquirrels. But, of course, we were not able to coordinate our schedules. Ha! So I rooted around underneath the ground cover to see if anything was starting to come up yet. I guess I was a little surprised at how many plants were not showing any life yet, seeing as how we've had such warm weather. I guess they must know what's best for them, and it is only March 15th...we could still have snow next month, highly doubtful, but not impossible. I did find a few early risers...underneath the straw were some healthy looking strawberry plants.

Underneath some overhanging rocks, I found this groundcover getting an early start. It's quite hardy so I'm not going to worry about it.

Lastly, underneath another pine tree, along with tons of pinecones and tree branches, (complements of the many squirrels that inhabit our yard, and play in our trees) were a bunch of bark chips that had fallen from the trunk. They caught my eye because they remind me of pieces of slate.

Father’s Day…

I had the best Father’s Day this year, and I’m not even a father.

David and I got up and went to church. Five people gave short talks on what Father’s Day meant to them. One of them was a real tear jerker, the kind where you really don’t want to start blubbering in public, so you try to hold it back and all that does is make your neck muscles hurt and your mouth move all on its own, you don’t have a tissue, so you don’t want the tears to start falling and you try to blink, blink, blink them back. Good stories! We were going to stay and practice a song with our fellow Quivering Quartet singers, but our organist had to get home and finish packing, because he was heading to the airport for a month long trip to Sweden. He plays organ for a Swedish group of singers and as they were going there to perform, he sort of had to go along…gee, tough huh? I hope he has a wonderful time. I suggested going out to lunch, because I didn’t think our only child left at home would have planned anything to do with his father, and David was pondering this, but he wanted to stop at home first. We took the long way home and drove through some of the worst hit areas of the recent tornado. All I can say is, WOW!

I happened to be driving and as we got closer to home, I wanted to stop at my Mom’s and pick up her Sunday newspaper. She was at the cabin and she specifically asked if I would pick up her and her neighbors mail and newspapers. As we were approaching my Mom’s house, we noticed a car in her driveway, a black car, a black Nissan Altima to be exact. My thought was, OMG, there is a car in her driveway…who can that be?…should I go in?…why would there be a strange car in her driveway?…wouldn’t that be cool if it was Andy’s car?…maybe Gorm parked her car there and got a ride to the cabin. I Never for once thought it could really be Andy, because he was in Cincinnati working. We were planning to go for a visit this weekend and he asked if we could come the following weekend because he had some food thing going on and would be working the whole weekend, so we decided we would be all packed and ready to go so we could just hop in the car and start driving as soon as the Jethro Tull concert ended on Saturday the 25th. It takes approximately 12ish hours to drive there and we wanted to get there by noonish. So, you can see why I didn’t give a second thought to a black Nissan Altima parked in my Mom’s driveway as possibly belonging to my son. David just said, I’ll come get the paper later, let’s just go home. (Little did I know, he, Ethan and Ray all knew Andy was planning on coming for a visit and they kept it secret from me. They almost succeeded in keeping it secret from his friends too, but someone spilled the beans).

So we get home, leave the car in the driveway, as we were going to leave again, walk into the house and who should saunter down the hall but Andy…I kind of just stood there and thought…huh, Andy’s home, weird! It took a bit to actually register in my thick confused brain. I gave him a big hug (and he actually hugged back), and then it was sort of like he’d never left. It’s so strange when the kids come to visit, how after just a minute, it seems normal for them to be standing there. He had to see my new car and test it out a bit, so we drove back to my Mom’s and picked up the black Nissan Altima that really was my sons’ and I drove his back and he tested mine out a bit more. It seems there are a few envious people out there drooling over my new baby. I like her more every day!

We got his car unpacked, gazed at his golf clubs, all the different kinds of beer and a 13 yr old Bourbon in the trunk, chatted a bit and left him to try and take a little nap while we made a Cub run for hamburger, buns, cheese, chips, coleslaw, pickles, corn, baked beans and soda. Trying to eat up a little more time for him to nap, we also stopped off at Bachman’s to get a Clematis for David from Ethan. I could have sworn I saw an email stating that all perennials were 50% off (they were not) but we bought them anyway.

Andy put together the hamburger, adding: salt, pepper, garlic, garlic salt, onion, hot pepper flakes, A-1 Steak Sauce, Lowry’s Seasoning and a few other things. They grilled them up, added the cheese, toasted the buns while I got the other stuff all ready. Andy’s friend Ray made an appearance while we were preparing and when all was ready, we loaded up our plates with excellent food, carried them on the cool vintage trays I recently purchased and ate on the patio.  Yummy!  I always wonder why my burgers are boring, well, I just don’t take the time to add the right ingredients because it’s just too much trouble. Ha! I really should remember this next time I try to cut corners.

They started talking about golfing and decided to go to Centerbrook Golf Course, a Par 3 close to us. I got left behind to clean up and weed the flagstones, but it sounds like they had a great time, and I didn’t mind staying home, this was guy’s time.  David got a birdie and Ethan did really well for his first time ever golfing.

Now it was time for Andy to see all his other friends and the next destination was Psycho Suzie’s and I got to go along. We sat out on their new patio overlooking the Mississippi River and ended up with 14 or 15 people gathered around three tables. All the boys were drooling over our waitress, Theresa. I didn’t see the attraction, but I’m not a boy. She reminded me a little of Megan Fox, (well I just went to IMDB and looked her up, and I guess she looks a Whole lot like Megan Fox), Yeah, now I guess I can see why they were drooling. Anyway…A whole lot of alcohol was consumed and a little food was eaten and the noise just from our table was…LOUD! Janelle, Matt Schleppenbach’s fiancé was just amazed that our waitress was able to remember everyone's name. Poor Janelle, she was pretty amusing, the more she drinks, the more she talks, and she was doing a lot really fast talking. It seemed like we all had a lot of fun though, and I keep thinking that I would never in my life have gone out with a bunch of my friends and had my Mom and Dad along too. So a big Thank-you goes out to Andy and Ethan’s friends for making us old folk feel welcome. They have done this on more than one occasion and I think it is so cool. Actually, the friends of all my children and very nice and accepting. No one is into anything bad, they are polite, and I can honestly say I like them all.

Since we have a new patio and a built in fire pit, the logical next stop was our house, complete with fire, more alcohol and lots of really LOUD talking. I was getting a little nervous that the neighbors would call in the authorities, but thankfully no one did.  I’ll have to admit that they even did a fairly good job of keeping their mess contained, no one accidentally let a cat out and they made sure Annie wasn’t out to get her tail burned. I’m assuming they all made it home in one piece, I haven’t heard otherwise yet, and I know a bunch of them (the ones that could get a day off work) are together again, eating, drinking, and catching up with their lives.

So, I had a really great day and I’m so glad that David had the best Father’s Day yet.

Didn’t get a good picture of Andy, so I guess this one will have to do. this is right after we ate the wonderful burgers and before they went golfing. He’s soooo tired, but he just wasn’t able to sleep. He’s still got another nine or so hours to stay awake.

Baby squirrels…

Spring is my favorite season. I love watching the snow melt with the coming warm weather. Little green plants start poking out of the brown, messy garden beds. Trees start getting substance with the leaf buds forming. The grass greens up and resumes growing…fast, maybe too fast and with it, dandelions. Within days, plants are up, the grass has been mowed, the ducks are back at the pond and baby animals are showing up. Some people have birds in their yard, some have deer, some racoons, we have ducks and squirrels. Last year we had a family of red squirrels, the cutest little things I have ever seen. We may still get a family of them, but I haven’t seen any yet. This year we have a family of grey squirrels living in our dead tree attached to our pond. It has some hollow branches that are connected to their nest and they can run in and out of it. Their mother sends them out to play for an hour or so every evening and we sit in Andy’s old room and watch them chasing each other all over that tree. We’ve counted at least five of them, but there may be six…poor momma squirrel, she looks a little ragged.

November 13…

We have had a superb 2 months, wonderful weather, sunny skies, no rain, perfect weather to finish off the patio. The evening of November 12th, we were wheelbarrowing woodchips to the side yard by the fence and the walkway I just finished. We were scurrying because a winter storm was expected to start sometime during the night.

In the morning of November 13, I was lying in bed and I always try to guess what time it is, providing I haven’t set the alarm to actually wake me up. I guessed about 7:30, which was just about right, and as I lay there, I realized the sound from outside sounded very muffled. If you pay attention, you can always tell when snow has fallen during the night, because any sound coming from outside sounds like it is covered by blankets.

I got out of bed, looked out the window and wow! there was snow, big, fat flakes falling down, and blowing sideways and twirling around. It snowed quite hard until about 2:30, then it just sort of spit a little, leaving us with about 10 inches of snow.  The temperature was high enough that when we got around to shoveling off the deck and driveway, I just wore a sweater and a furry lined sweatshirt. It was so warm that I was sweating while shoveling. I was working on the driveway when Ethan came home from working at Target, and he said Target had completely sold out of all shovels and icemelt. I’ll also bet most of their mittens, hats, kids boots, jackets and sleds were gone. It was just the most perfect snow to make snowmen and snowballs out of, and you know that snow has to be wet to make good snowmen and snowballs, so that means that this wet snow was really, really heavy. I could barely lift a shovel full of snow, it was like too firm slush. Poor Annie had snow clumps in her leg fir that I couldn’t even pull off, it had to melt off.

The bad part of this day was losing power. It went off about 12:30 and came on while Ethan and David were out picking up a few things from Cub, and our pizza dinner from Scoreboard which was about 5:15. I was finding candles and lighting them in each room, making sure I had ones in jars or out of the way so the cats wouldn’t start the house on fire. I was upstairs lighting the last few when I heard a noise, sound in the house…power had been restored. Man, are we ever spoiled by power. No TV, no radio, no internet, no computer. I could have had computer, but my laptop is so big that the battery tends to peter out pretty quickly. My iPOD was just about dead, and so was my phone, and with no power, I couldn’t charge them. I had done some cleaning and dusting, and I though I would sit down a read a bit, but it was getting too dark. I had wanted to take some pictures of the first snow, but the battery for my camera was dead too. I tell you, when it rains it pours!! So I think I will try to take a few first thing in the morning before church. I did get one with the camera on my phone that I sent to both Kira and Andy. They were both going to be enjoying temperatures in the 70 – 80’s and I just thought they needed a little fresh snow in their lives.P1010871 P1010873

Squirrels…

We just can’t seem to keep squirrels out of our yard, not that we really want to, but they’re just so bold! I saw something white on the bank by the driveway and realized it was one of the many white squirrels we have roaming the neighborhood. Of course I pulled out my camera ( which lives in my purse) but only managed to get one picture of him before he noticed me. Drat!

Once I got into the porch, I heard a strange noise…a squirrel, this time a grey one, having a snack out of the bird feeder. He was so cute I decided to take a few pictures of him too.

Around the yard…

The other evening we were skyping with Andy and he asked if I could walk the laptop around the house. It’s been four months since he’s been here and he wanted to see if anything has changed. Unfortunately, there are still boxes waiting to find a new home. As I said in my previous post, we have a few projects started, and I need to put a huge shelf together before I can put the boxes away. I suppose I could do that tomorrow too…hmmm, my to-do list is getting kind of long.

Anyway, I thought Andy might like to see what the yard looks like at this time of year. The plants are quite a bit bigger than they were in June, and the pear tree is so loaded with pears that the weight broke some of the branches, so I think that poor tree is in for a severe pruning after harvest. The goldfish in the pond keep having babies and they grow really fast. It’s hard to believe that the fish in the pictures are this spring’s babies. I didn’t get the huge white fish in the picture, but I think there might be a koi in there.
